Man is killed by train in apparent suicide - January 13th, 2004

A man died Tuesday night when he was struck by a train on the Northwest Side in an apparent suicide, police said.

The incident happened about 5:15 p.m. south of West Orange Grove and North Thornydale roads, near a bridge spanning the Canada del Oro Wash, said Tucson Police Department Sgt. Dave Leotaud.

The train engineer saw the man but wasn't able to stop in time. Nobody else was seen in the area, Leotaud said.

Clothing and various items police believe belonged to the man were in the area. The man has not been identified, Leotaud said.

The train, carrying United Parcel Service cargo, stopped while authorities cleared the scene.

The Pima County Medical Examiner's Office will investigate the incident.
